NMN — nicotinamide mononucleotide — has gone from a niche molecule in ageing-research labs to one of the fastest-growing categories in UK wellness in less than five years. If you've landed here, you're probably trying to answer one of three questions: is this stuff legal in the UK, does it actually work, and which one should I buy. This guide answers all three, in that order, without the marketing hype that dominates most of the writing on this topic.
A short note on who wrote this. Ivvion is a UK supplement brand and we sell NMN. We've tried to make this guide useful even if you ultimately buy from a competitor — because the easiest way to lose a customer's trust is to oversell a category we're part of. Where we're biased, we'll tell you.
Is NMN legal in the UK in 2026?
Yes. NMN is legal to sell, buy and consume in the United Kingdom as a food supplement.
This is worth saying clearly because there has been confusion. In late 2022 the US FDA moved to reclassify NMN as a drug rather than a supplement, which created uncertainty for US sellers and a lot of misleading "NMN banned" headlines. The UK position is different: the MHRA has not classified NMN as a medicine, and the Food Standards Agency permits it as a food supplement under standard supplement regulations.
Two important regulatory facts shape how NMN is sold in the UK. First, NMN has no authorised health claim on the Great Britain Nutrition and Health Claims Register. No UK brand can legally tell you that NMN will improve your energy, reverse your ageing, or treat any condition. Any brand that tells you NMN "will" do anything specific for you is in breach of UK ASA rules. Second, NMN supplements fall under general food supplement regulations, meaning quality varies enormously and buyers have to do more work than they should to filter the good from the bad.
What is NMN, and why does it matter?
NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide. It is a small molecule that occurs naturally in your body and in trace amounts in foods like broccoli, cabbage, edamame and avocado. The amounts in food are too small to matter for what NMN supplements are trying to do.
NMN is a precursor — a building block — for NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). NAD+ is a coenzyme found in every cell of your body. It powers your cells' energy production and activates enzymes responsible for DNA repair and cellular maintenance.
NAD+ levels in human tissues decline steadily from young adulthood onward. By age 50, average tissue NAD+ is approximately half of what it was at age 20. The hypothesis behind NMN supplementation is straightforward: you cannot take NAD+ directly, because the molecule is too large to absorb through the gut intact. But you can take a precursor like NMN, which your body converts into NAD+ within hours.
What does the human research on NMN actually show?
As of 2026, there are roughly a dozen published human trials of NMN supplementation. Three stand out as the strongest evidence.
Yoshino and colleagues, 2021, published in Science. Washington University in St Louis gave 25 postmenopausal prediabetic women 250 mg of NMN per day for 10 weeks. The NMN group showed a roughly 25% improvement in muscle insulin sensitivity compared to placebo.
Igarashi and colleagues, 2022, published in npj Aging. Keio University in Japan gave 108 healthy older adults (average age 65) 250 mg of NMN per day for 12 weeks. The NMN group showed measurable improvements in walking speed and grip strength.
Liao and colleagues, 2023, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. Recreational runners took 300 mg of NMN per day for 6 weeks and showed improvements in aerobic capacity.
Honest caveats: these trials are small by drug-development standards. The effects are real but not large. NMN is not a treatment for any specific disease. Long-term effects of multi-year supplementation are still being studied.
How much NMN should you take?
The doses used in the strongest human studies cluster between 250 mg and 500 mg per day. Lower doses (under 150 mg) have not consistently shown measurable effects. Very high doses (above 1,000 mg) are well-tolerated but have not been shown to produce proportionally better outcomes.
Always check the mg per capsule, not the mg per serving, when comparing brands. This is one of the most common reasons buyers think they are taking a clinical-trial dose when they are actually taking a quarter of one.
How do you absorb NMN — and why does delivery matter?
Standard NMN capsules are absorbed through the digestive tract. A portion is broken down by stomach acid and enzymes before reaching the intestinal lining. Two delivery innovations improve this.
Sublingual NMN (dissolved under the tongue) bypasses digestion entirely and enters the bloodstream directly. Absorption is faster but the format is less convenient and has a bitter taste.
Liposomal NMN encapsulates the NMN molecule in a lipid (fat) shell, protecting it through the digestive tract and improving absorption at the intestinal wall. This is the approach used in our Elite formula (LipoAvail™). For everyday use, liposomal is the most practical high-absorption option.
What are the side effects of NMN?
NMN is well-tolerated in published human trials at doses up to 1,250 mg per day. The most commonly reported side effects in clinical trials are mild and gastrointestinal: nausea, bloating, or loose stools at higher doses. These typically resolve by reducing the dose or taking NMN with food.
No serious adverse events have been reported in published human trials of NMN. No interactions with common medications have been identified in published research, though this area is still being studied. If you are on prescription medication, consult your GP before starting NMN.
How to choose an NMN supplement in the UK
Seven criteria to check before buying.
- Uthever® or equivalent branded NMN. Uthever® is the most used raw material in published human trials. It means verifiable supply chain and consistent purity.
- Third-party testing. Reputable brands publish certificates of analysis (COAs) from independent labs. These confirm what's actually in the capsule.
- Accurate dose per capsule. Check mg per capsule, not mg per serving. You want 250–500 mg per capsule to match trial doses.
- Liposomal delivery if absorption is a priority. Standard capsule NMN works; liposomal works better.
- UK manufacturing or EU GMP certification. Manufacturing standards matter. UK or EU GMP-certified manufacturers are subject to inspection.
- Transparent ingredient list. Pure NMN should be the main ingredient. Avoid brands with opaque proprietary blends.
- A real money-back guarantee. Brands confident in their product offer 30–60 day money-back guarantees.

What's the difference between NMN and NR?
Both raise NAD+ levels in humans. NMN is one biochemical step closer to NAD+ in the conversion pathway. NR has been on the market longer and has more cumulative safety data. NMN has more recent human efficacy data including the Yoshino, Igarashi, and Liao trials cited above. We chose NMN because the recent human efficacy trials have been more consistent in showing measurable outcomes.
Frequently asked questions
Is NMN safe to take long-term? No long-term multi-year safety data exists in humans yet. Short-term trials up to 12 months have shown NMN to be well tolerated at doses up to 1,250 mg per day.
What time of day should I take NMN? Most users take NMN in the morning. There is no strong evidence that timing materially affects outcomes.
Can I take NMN with my other supplements? NMN is commonly stacked with Resveratrol and TMG. None of these stacks has been shown to be harmful in published research.
Does NMN work for women specifically? The Yoshino 2021 trial was conducted entirely in postmenopausal women and showed clear effects on insulin sensitivity.
Is NMN vegan? Pure NMN is vegan. Always check the capsule shell — most premium brands now use vegetable capsules.
Can I take NMN if I have a medical condition? Always consult your GP before starting any supplement if you have a medical condition or are taking prescription medication.
